William English Personal: A member of the Winston-Salem State University Clarence "Big House" Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame, William English scored 2,113 points and pulled down 872 rebounds during his stellar career at WSSU. He ranks ninth in WSSU history in scoring with 2,113 points, fifth in free throws made (285), second in field goals made (914), and fifth in rebounding with 872. He also ranks 20th in CIAA history in scoring. He is a two-time All-America selection in 1968 and 1969, as well as being named All-CIAA and All-NAIA. He holds the CIAA All-Time single-game scoring record with the 77-point performance he turned in versus Fayetteville State University. He was a late round draft choice of the Detroit Pistons Basketball Club (NBA) in addition to being invited to attend the US Olympic Basketball tryouts in 1968. Averaged 20.1 points per game during his career at WSSU. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at WSSU for 20 years after graduating. English is now retired from his employment with the city of Winston-Salem's recreation department.
