Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State men's tennis team captured its first victory on Friday afternoon when it edged Guilford College, 4-3, at the WSSU Tennis Complex. The Rams improved to 1-11 on the season, while the Quakers remained winless at 0-2.
WSSU kicked off the match by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. At the No. 1 doubles spot, Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter handed Jose Ortiz and Alec Chase an 8-5 defeat, while Maximillian Glodde and Troy Moore crushed Will Mason-Deese and Ryo Kawai, 8-1, at position two.
In singles, the Rams kept their winning ways rolling as Coxton put away Ortiz 7-6, 6-2 in the first position and Glodde easily defeated Chase 6-1, 6-4 in the second spot. Hunter defeated Mike Muir 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 as the three singles victories secured the win for the home team.
The Quakers picked up wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, but it wasn't enough for victory. Mason-Deese defeated Lindquist 6-4, 6-1 and Kawai defeated Moore 6-4. 6-2. WSSU's Andrew Jones won the first set 7-6 over Patrick Childs, but the opponent came back to win 6-1 in the second set and 11-9 in the super-tiebreaker.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, March 1 when they travel to Asheville, N.C. to face UNC-Asheville in a non-conference collegiate tennis contest.
