Rams, Lady Rams Strong at Liberty On Track Open

LYNCHBURG, VA - The temperatures were warm enough for the Rams and Lady Rams Indoor Track & Field teams at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center. Both squads had great performances on day two of the On Track Open hosted by Liberty University. WSSU sophomore thrower Cynthia Grady and sophomore sprinter James Legins highlighted a pair of great performances by the Winston-Salem State University indoor track & field teams.

 

It was the Rams sprinters and field athletes who led the way in the event with a number of great finishes. Legins had the best overall individual finish of the day placing second in the men's 500m dash with a time of 1:09.33 in the event. Only Liberty's Paul Leinweber had a better finish than Legins. Legins also finished eighth in the men's long jump with a leap of 21' 00.00" (6.40m). Fellow sophomore Brandon Howe placed seventh in the men's 400m dash in a time of 51.63 in the event. WSSU freshman Mark Brown finished ninth in the men's shot putt with a throw of 44' 05.50" (13.55m).

 

The Rams' `A' 4x400m relay team also had a great finish as well placing second at the event in a time of 3:22.98. The WSSU `B' 4x400m relay team also fared well in the event placing seventh with a time of 3:32.65.

 

Following suit with the men's team, the Lady Rams sprinters and field athletes were also strong on the day, led by sophomore Cynthia Grady's sixth place finish in the women's shot putt. Grady tossed the shot put 35'11.50" (10.90m). Senior Miah Harris was not far behind placing 10th with a throw of 32'05.75".

 

On the track, it was junior sprinter Wykeita Barnett who led the way for the Lady Rams placing sixth in women's 60m dash in a time of 7.83. Freshman sprinter Taylor Calamese finished eighth in the women's 800m run with a time of 2:32.52.

 

The Rams and Lady Rams will next take the track next weekend when they take part in the HBCU Invitational in Landover, MD.
